2010 Inaugural Event

13 October 2010

"It was a brilliant day!"

"Well done to all involved - really first class event that I think surprised a lot of people. Great buzz today after the conference and lots of chatter around the city."

"Any initiative that opens up the processes of planning for the future is very welcome indeed."

"Enjoyed myself immensely; I was at a conference in London that cost my company the best part of £2,000. This one cost the company a day’s wages and has already produced more benefits."

On Wednesday 13 October 2010, over 200 people gathered at the Phoenix Square Film and Digital Media Centre in the city of Leicester, UK, to listen to a dozen visionary speakers and imagine the future of Leicester in 2020.

The result was an intoxicating mix of individuals from different backgrounds and professions, and an ambitious wishlist which covered near futures as well as 2010.

It was a day of inspirational speakers, networking, presentations and unconference focused around innovation, creative technologies and sustainability. The aim was to challenge traditional ways of thinking and working; participate in generating new ideas; future proof your business; think like a futurist and get a head start on competitors.

Delegates included senior decision-makers and opinion leaders from a wide range of business, non-profit and community sectors. We invited them to be liberatedfrom the day to day, to hear about exciting future technologies, participate in the discussion, and to try their hand at being a futurist and explore new world thinking. T

he speakers included keynotes John Thackara and Warren Buckley along with presentations by Fiona Bennie, Thilo Boeck, Bernd Carsten-Stahl, Nicholas Ebbs, Michael Fern, Aidan Lane, Martin Rieser, Hugo Spowers, John Stobart, Satish Visavadia. Find out more about them and their organisations via the People pages, where you can also read Leicester Mercury articles by and about them.

The conversations were live-tweeted, blogged and AudioBOO’d by Amplified10, a not-for-profit organization that uses social media to enable and encourage community participation around events, conferences and public conversations. Follow the stream and listen to the interviews here.
